| PILE UP ENDS
TURVEYS RACE IN HUNGARY |
|
Oliver Turvey's overnight hopes of taking a step
forward in the Formula Renault 3.5 Championship were wiped out in a split
second this afternoon following a first lap pile-up at the Hungaroring.
The RSF driver - who could only manage a frustrating eighth place in
yesterday's reverse grid race - barely managed eight of the circuit's 14 turns
before his race was brought to an abrupt end.
The major incident was
triggered when Adrian Zaugg was tapped into a spin at turn 10, his broadside
car collecting Greg Mansell who in turn was shunted by Edoardo Mortara, Adrian
Valles and Turvey.
Fortunately for Turvey the top of the points table
was barely affected by the outcome of the chaotic race which also saw the
retirement of championship rivals Marcos Martinez, James Walker and Miguel
Molina.
"A retirement was the reverse of what I needed at this point in
the championship," a philosophical Turvey said later. "But that's
racing.
"I got a good start, lost a few places and was racing hard for
position when all of a sudden there was this chaos in front of
me.
"Initially I thought I might make it through but someone knocked
Mansell's car directly into my path and I hit the front of it and that was the
end of that.
"But with so many retirements it's not affected the
championship too badly. I'm still fifth and those ahead of me have only picked
up a handful of points. So there's still a good opportunity to catch up at the
next rounds at Silverstone."
