TURVEY FINISHES THIRD AT THE NURBURGRING
The second round of the Formula Renault Eurocup was held at the famous Nurburgring. Like all the European tracks, this was another new circuit to for Turvey. Although the gradients and camber changes made for a pretty challenging layout, Oliver managed to learn the circuit quickly.

This was just as well given that there were 42 cars in the field, including many good drivers with previous FRenault experience. With the top 20 drivers covered by only 0.5 seconds in testing – around a two minute lap! – it was clearly going to be another very competitive weekend.

In qualifying it’s essential to get your best laps in straightaway on fresh tyres, which is not easy given the traffic. Oliver didn’t get the best out of the new tyres so only qualified 12th for the first race, although as he had set two identical times he was 7th for race two grid. This is an area Turvey knows he needs to improve and will be working hard on before the next race with the team.

As the field headed out onto the grid for race one a short rain shower made the track damp but it dried pretty quickly allowing most to start on slicks. Turvey's race pace was very good and he was able to lap consistently as quick as the leaders. Turvey was able to move forward and make good progress, passing five cars to finish race one in 7th position. The second race was even better, as Turvey made up several positions on the first lap and then snatched fourth place on the very last lap. After the post race scrutineering, the second place driver was excluded so Oliver inherited 3rd position and his first Eurocup podium. After scoring points in all of the first four races Turvey is currently joint third in the championship standings.

After an interview earlier in the weekend, Oliver was invited to commentate on the second race of the World Series by Renault for the TV broadcast. As this was directly after his race he had to quickly change and make his way to the commentary box to give a drivers perspective of the Nurburgring. Turvey found this opportunity to be great fun, but also as a chance to raise his profile to a worldwide TV audience.

There’s now quite a long break till the next Eurocup race at the Hungaroring, but Oliver certainly won’t be relaxing in the meantime as he has got to get straight back to his Engineering studies at Cambridge University with his exams fast approaching, as well as following his training program.
